Two seahorse tattoos on ankles
Realism · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
Two seahorses are tattooed one on each ankle, each with a curled tail beside a shaded body and a fin detail. The work uses dark greyscale shading to show scales, ridges and texture, with soft highlights on the forms. The photograph is taken at a close angle with a warm, sepia-leaning tone and a blurred background, and the feet are wearing light textured shoes.

Dear Hal,

The snow came over the Col de Brisa on Tuesday, two days early, and the carrier's mule refused the last switchback, so I am writing this by the stove at the refuge with my boots steaming on the rail. You will think me daft for carrying the tin up here, but the seahorses came in it and I have not had the heart to leave them behind at the harbour.
Rosa at the lower inn laughed when I unwrapped them. Two dried seahorses, grey as old pewter, one with its tail curled tight around a bent nail. You had them from your uncle's shop in Porthleven, and I suppose you meant them as a joke about my feet, which have not been dry once since we left the coast. I took them as a dare. I wanted to see whether a thing made for warm shallow water could learn to live under a sky that cracks at night.
I pinned one to the post beside the door and kept the other in my coat pocket, where I can feel its ridges through the wool. Each morning the light comes up grey over the ridge, and I tell myself the sea is out there somewhere, going out and coming back the way it always does. Tomorrow I cross with Anselm, who says the wind on the far side will take a hat clean off a man's head and drop it in another valley.
If the pass opens in May, I will bring the pair of them down to you in the same tin. We can set them on the windowsill at Porthleven and see whether they still remember the tide. Keep the kettle warm for me.
Yours, Mara
