Feather tattoo on the forearm
Blackwork · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A large feather runs diagonally down the forearm, with a shaft of beads hanging from its base. The feather is built from fine black linework, layered quills and small dots, with soft grey shading that gives it depth. The collage includes two close-up views of the feathers' detailed quill patterns against lighter skin.

She took it to the packing shed, where her uncle kept the old string box. Beads from her mother's broken necklace rattled in a tin marked SPARES. Each bead she threaded stood for a tree she had counted that summer, forty-one in all, and she tied them in a tail below the quill so the feather would hang straight.
Uncle Ted came in at dusk, wiping his hands on a rag. He looked at the feather for a long time and said jays cached acorns every autumn, that they remembered every hiding place, and you could tell their feathers by the blue bars. He did not ask about the beads. He hung the feather from the nail above the door, where the light from the yard caught it.
By morning the beads had stopped swinging, and the first wind came in from the west, lifting the fine barbs one by one until the whole thing seemed to breathe. Martha counted the trees again from the gate and got forty-one, which was the number she had wanted, and which meant nothing at all to the jays.
