Feather tattoo on the side ribs
Realism · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo
A large feather runs diagonally across the side of the torso, drawn with fine hatched linework and soft grey shading that shows the barbs and central shaft. The black and grey tones follow the curve of the skin, and the feather sits in the lower-left part of the frame. A hand rests on the waist at the lower right, and the background is pale and softly blurred.

You have kept the lost property hatch at Crossley Junction for nineteen years, long enough to know what people leave on trains: umbrellas by the dozen, reading glasses folded inside timetables, a wedding ring once, wedged in a seat pocket like a dropped sweet. So when the woman from the 17:42 slides a grey feather across the counter, its shaft as long as your forearm, you almost tell her the office doesn't take birds. Nobody loses a thing like that by accident.

The feather is lighter than it has any right to be. Its barbs fan out in fine pencilled strokes, darker near the shaft and fading to nothing at the tips, and when you tilt it under the strip light the central spine catches like a wire. She says she found it on the bench at the far end of Platform Two, though that bench was painted over twice last spring. She asks you to hold it until someone comes for it. You write it into the ledger: one feather, grey, no name, Platform Two.
Three weeks later, in the rain that comes sideways off the Pennines, an old signalman in a donkey jacket leans on your counter and asks, without looking up, whether anyone has handed in a feather. He describes the curve before you bring it out, the little kink two-thirds along where his sister's hand used to catch it. She swept them off the sill of the signal box every autumn, he says, and never once let him throw them away. You slide the feather across. He holds it up to the platform lamps, and for a moment the barbs go silver as smoke.
After he has gone, you open the ledger to the line you wrote three weeks ago. Beside *no name*, in your own small hand, you write his. Then the 19:05 sounds its horn somewhere beyond the footbridge, and you close the hatch and go out into the weather.
