Feather tattoo on upper back

Back · Black and grey · Photo

A woman is photographed from behind, showing a single feather tattoo on the upper back near the shoulder blade. The right panel is a close-up of the same feather, drawn with soft grey shading and fine barbs along the shaft. The feather is set diagonally across the frame against plain skin, with an outdoor background behind the subject.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The ewes had been lambing since the first frost, and by the third week of February my father had stopped sleeping through the night. I was the one who walked the top field at dawn with the torch, counting heads against the stone wall, and it was there, in the lee of the old gate, that I found the feather pinned flat in the rime as if someone had laid it out on a tablecloth.

It was a primary from a buzzard, I think, or a wild goose, grey at the base and darkening toward the tip, the barbs still combed straight. Nothing in the field had disturbed it. Frost had grown around its edges in small white feathers of its own. I stood there longer than the cold allowed, thinking about my mother, who had kept a jar of such things on the kitchen windowsill and never once told me why.

Dad's ewe had twins that morning, both alive, both wobbling on their stilt legs. I carried the feather back in my coat pocket and forgot it until supper, when I found it still there, bent now from my hand, and set it on the table between the salt and the bread. He looked at it for a while without speaking. Then he picked it up, turned it toward the lamp so the soft grey shading came alive along the shaft, and said the buzzards had been circling the far pasture all week, which meant the lambs were safe for now.

I didn't ask him how he knew. I took the feather upstairs and put it in the jar, next to hers.
