Feathered wing tattoo across back and upper arm

Realism · Back · Black and grey · Photo

A large wing made of layered feathers spreads across the upper back, over the shoulder blade and down the upper arm. The feathers are rendered in soft, smooth greyscale shading with fine feather detail and strong highlights along the edges. The image is black and grey only, and the wing fills most of the frame against a textured grey background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The rook came down on the wall of the lock-keeper's cottage the week the river froze, and it had only one good wing. Nell Harrow saw it from the kitchen window while she scraped porridge from the pan, and she knew it had been in a snare, because the left pinion hung off at an angle no feather should.

She fetched the bread knife and a heel of brown loaf, and when she stepped outside the bird did not fly. It watched her with the flat patience of something that had decided long ago that people were weather. She set crumbs on the step. Every morning for a fortnight she did the same, and every morning the rook moved a little nearer the door, dragging the wing across the frost like a wet sleeve.

On the last morning of the thaw she found the wing folded on the mat, every primary and secondary laid flat in grey order, the way a man lays out his tools after a job. The bird had gone up into the alders at the edge of Hollin Wood. She never saw it leave. She only saw its shadow cross the lock gate, wide and dark, and the water took the sun and held it a moment longer than it should.

She kept the feathers in a biscuit tin under the stairs. Years later, when her grandson asked why the lock gate had been painted the colour of smoke, she told him that a bird with one good wing will still come back for its bread, and that you should always leave the step clean for the ones who return.
