Feather with Isaiah 40:31 script

Realism · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo

A feather runs diagonally across the skin, with the reference Isaiah 40:31 above it and the phrase 'He will soar on wings like eagles' along its length in a fine script. The feather is drawn with fine linework and soft grey shading to show its barbs and quill. The image is a close crop of the torso with a light grey garment at the bottom edge, and the tattoo is shown in black ink and greys only.

Right, pull the flap down, the wind's getting into the candles again. Sit close, you lot at the back, I'm not shouting this twice. The Harrowgate Fair came round the year the big dipper took its last ride, and in the third van lived a man called Ezra Pell, who threw knives for a living and never once hit the girl he was paid to miss.

Nobody thought much of his trick, only his hands. Every evening after the lamps came on he walked out past the dodgems to the far field, where the cloud sat low on the hedge, and he stood there with his arms out like a gull's, waiting. Folk laughed. The wheel-man said he'd catch his death of cold.

Then one wet October his daughter Lis, seven years old and sharp as a tack, found a feather in the sawdust, long and grey, its quill gone pale as bone. She brought it to him and asked what bird drops a thing that big. He said an eagle, probably. She said eagles can't live in England. He said then it was a very lost one, and she tucked it inside her coat and kept it till the fair packed up.

When the caravans rolled out at dawn, the girl watched from the back window. Her father was standing in the empty field with his arms out, and the wind came up off the hedge and lifted him a yard clear of the grass, just long enough for the hedge to see. Then he came down soft as a dropped glove and climbed into the van, and that's the whole of it, so mind the lamps on your way out.
