Feather with mountains and pines on a forearm

Dotwork · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A feather outline is filled with a mountain range, clusters of pine trees and cloud shapes, with the quill curling off to the left. The work uses bold black outlines and stippled dotwork shading to give the peaks and trees their texture. The tattoo sits across a pale forearm against a purple wall and a white radiator, with the design filling most of the frame.

The third letter arrived in February, folded inside a seed catalogue, and Mrs Ardagh read it standing at the sorting counter because she did not trust the stool. The hand was careful and pressed hard, as if the nib had been fighting the paper. The pines on the north slope are leaning toward the road again, it said. Tell the council before the thaw brings the rock down. Below that was a single line about weather over the col, and no name.

Nobody in Carrick Glen had ever seen the man who wrote them. The letters came in grey envelopes with no stamp, pushed through the brass flap after the shop had shut, so she found them on the mat each morning like something the wind had carried in. She kept them in a biscuit tin under the till. She answered with a stub of pencil on the back of a parcel docket and left the docket in the box by the door, where the postman collected it on his round.

In April a new envelope came with a single grey feather inside, long and split, its quill snapped at one end. She turned it under the lamp. Along the vane someone had drawn, in ink so fine it looked like dust, the ridge of the range: the col, a shelf of cloud, and stands of pine running down into the valley where the road bends. It was the view from her own front step.

She locked up at six and walked to the bend in the road to look. The slope was dark with trees, and the cloud sat exactly where the feather said it would. She pinned the feather above the till, took a fresh docket from the drawer, and wrote: Lean away from the road. I have told the council. She climbed the north path herself and left the docket under a stone at the tree line, then came down in the last of the light and put the kettle on.
