Feathered arrow with script word on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A fine line arrow runs diagonally across the forearm, with a feathered fletching at the upper left and an arrowhead at the lower right. A thin flowing script word is written along the shaft of the arrow. The tattoo is rendered in black linework with light shading, and the soft grey background keeps the focus on the skin.

The big top had lost two poles since the spring, and the canvas sagged over the ring like a tired sail. Teodora sat on an upturned crate behind the flaps, stringing a bow that had belonged to her grandfather, and listened to the crowd thin out in the stands. Her act had once filled the tent. Now it was her, a hay bale painted with a target, and a boy from the village who came for the free popcorn.

Her brother Jonah found her there with the tally sheet. Forty-one tickets for the evening house, he said, and nobody under sixty. He did not say the rest. The owner had been talking to a man from the council about the land, and the land was worth more than the elephants that had gone out in June. Teodora tested the string with her thumb and it hummed like a plucked wire.
She took the last arrow from the quiver, the one with the grey goose feather she had replaced twice that summer, and walked into the ring under the one working spotlight. The boy stopped chewing. She drew, held, and did not aim at the bale. She aimed at the top of the tent, where the seam had split, and loosed.
The arrow went through the rent in the canvas and out into the dusk. Nobody in the stands saw where it landed. Jonah swore he heard it strike the roof of the caravan park two fields over, and the boy swore it went all the way to the church spire. Teodora only knew that the light came through the hole in a single white line, and that the crowd, for the first time all season, stood up to look.
