Feathered headdress watercolour design
Mixed · Flash
The image shows a feathered headdress in profile, with long dark quills, pale feathers and trailing fringes. The feathers are built from loose, ink-like brushstrokes and splatters with soft grey and black shading. Teal and coral washes sit around the red and cream beadwork at the front, all set on an off-white background.

The rain had got into the rolls of crimson silk again, so Ada Pring laid the headdress across two kitchen chairs and let the back room steam around it. Mr Okonedo's order had come by the late post with a note that said only: it must look as though it has been out in weather. He wanted the splashed look, ink flicked from a brush, grey bleeding into black, and he had paid for it in advance.

She had spent three weeks on the quills. The dark ones came from a crow-feather supplier in Hull. The pale ones she dyed in weak tea and a teaspoon of ink, then flicked until they spattered like a squall had passed over them. The teal and coral washes she mixed from cochineal and the blue left at the bottom of her late mother's gentian jar. At the front, where the beadwork sat in its neat red rows, she worked slowly, because the beads were the only part that had to stay still.
On the Friday the stage manager at the Palais sent word that the fringes dragged in the second half and would have to come off. Ada took her scissors and her good lamp down to the wings. The bandleader stood there with his arms folded, watching the long fringes lift and fall as the brass tuned up. She held the headdress up to the light and told him each quill had taken her an afternoon. He looked at it for a long time and said the trailing ones were the only part of the thing that moved like rain. She went back up the stairs with the scissors still in her coat pocket.
She left the fringes on. When the lights came up that night the grey washes went silver at the edges, and somewhere in the third row a woman stopped mid-sentence to watch it pass. Afterwards Ada swept the back room and found one pale quill caught in the hem of her apron, spattered like the rest. She pressed it flat in her ledger between the week's invoices, where it still is.
