Blue feathered bird with lace pattern on back
Back · Colour · Photo
A large bird in flight fills most of the back, with its wings and tail made of blue feathers shaded in lighter and darker tones. The body and lower tail are filled with black lace-like ornamental patterns, with fine dark linework defining the feather edges. The blue ink dominates the composition against the smooth, lightly freckled skin.

The jay came to the cottage sill the morning after Mother's bobbins went quiet for good. It was blue as a dyer's vat, and it kept its head cocked at me through the glass, waiting, the way she used to wait for a pattern to come right under her fingers.

I had never made lace. Mother made it, pins set in a straw cushion, forty bobbins clicking like beetles in the front room while the village women gossiped about the Wrenhall lord's debts. She kept the old pattern book in the chest, sheets of pricked paper with birds drawn in brown ink, and she told me the bird in the margin was the one the forest keeps. Its wings were feathers, she said, and its belly was net, so it could fly between the trunks without the trees noticing.
I sat at her cushion for nine days. The thread slipped and knotted, and I cursed in the dialect she forbade. On the tenth morning the jay was back on the sill, and when I looked down, the lace had taken the shape of a body, with a little tail of pricked holes opening like a fan. I tied off the last pair of bobbins and carried the cloth out to the edge of the trees, where the bracken was white with frost.
I laid the lace across a fallen oak. The jay dropped from the branch, took one corner in its beak, and rose, and the cloth lifted with it stitch by stitch until feathers and net were a single bird over the village roofs. By dusk the frost had set the pattern into the lane, and the children coming home from school stepped carefully around the dark lace prints in the rime.
