Feathered wings across a man's back

Back · Black and grey · Photo

A large pair of stylised angel wings covers the upper and middle back, with the feathers drawn as layered, pointed plumes that taper into long trailing flight feathers. The linework is bold and the feathers are shaded with dark grey and black, with lighter grey highlights giving the wings some depth. The photograph is taken straight on from behind, with the wings filling most of the frame against a plain, indoor studio background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Sit closer, the fire will only last for one more telling. You want to know why the wing-maker of Ur-Sulan never sold a pair to anyone who asked for speed? Then listen. The boy came up from the salt flats with a cough in his chest and a bundle of stolen goose quills, and he asked old Ketteb to make him wings that would carry him over the mountain where his mother had gone to trade her weaving.

Ketteb did not refuse him. He laid the quills out on the cloth in rows, each one overlapping the last like the scales of a fish, and he told the boy that a feather does nothing alone. Layer on layer, he said, each pointed like a spear tip so the air parts instead of striking. The long flight feathers at the tail were not for lifting but for steering, and they had to be dark, so that the sun could not read them.

They worked through a winter. The boy learned to shade each plume with soot and river clay until the wings looked carved from storm cloud, and in the spring Ketteb strapped them on him at the top of the terrace. The boy ran three steps and leapt. For a breath he hung there, and the wind lifted the trailing feathers high behind him like a dark banner.

Then the wind dropped, and he fell into the reeds below, laughing and bruised. He climbed back up the stairs with the wings dragging, and asked Ketteb why they had not lifted him further. The old man only pointed down the valley, where his mother's cart was already climbing the road toward them. Some journeys are made by the feet, Ketteb said, and the wings are for the falling.
