Feathers and a branch on an ankle

Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

The tattoo shows three feathers bound together at the top with a cord or tie, with a thin branch and small buds rising above them. The feathers use fine outlines with soft grey shading along their barbs, and the branch is drawn with simple, delicate lines. The design sits diagonally across the ankle and onto the top of the foot against white bedding, with the ankle bone and skin tone clearly visible.

Come closer, the lot of you, the back row can hear me fine from the rail. Mind the sawdust. Now. There was a lad called Tobias Quill who ran off with the Michaelmas fair in the year the river froze, and he carried three feathers in his coat, kestrel, all of them, pulled from a bird that dropped out of the sky at his feet on the common.

He didn't know why he kept them. Nobody asks a boy why he keeps things. His mother had bound them together at the quill with a length of red cord, the way she tied kindling, and told him a thing bound three ways will not come apart in a wind. He laughed at her. He was seventeen and clever with his hands, and he thought he knew better than a woman who'd buried two husbands and a goat.

The fair went on through the frost. He shod horses, he threw knives at a painted board for a man called Crane, he slept in the wagon beside the donkey that never once looked at him. Every dawn he walked out past the last tent to where a hawthorn grew crooked out of the ditch, and every dawn it had a few more buds, pale as milk teeth, opening on a branch no thicker than a knitting needle.

On the morning the caravans turned for home, he pressed the feathers into the fork of that hawthorn and knotted the cord around the twig, and he left them there. Some say the fair never came back that way. Some say Tobias is still out there, kneeling in the ditch, waiting for the buds to open. I say the feathers are still in the hedge, and if you go looking, you'll find the cord has grown into the bark.
