Hanging feathers and beads on the ankle
Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo shows several long feathers hanging from a bound stick decorated with two round beads at the top. The feathers are drawn with soft, fine strokes and grey shading that gives them some depth. The design is in black and grey and sits diagonally across the ankle and top of the foot, set against a plain white sheet.

The wind has been pulling at the broken east tower for three nights now, and you are the only one left in Carrow Keep who knows how to quiet it. You climb the spiral with the bound rowan stick under your arm, two river pebbles knocking together at its crown like teeth. Below, the moat has frozen to a grey plate, and the sheep bells from the lower farm come up thin as needles.

Old Mab Tenney left you the stick before she went down to the village. Her grandmother had hung it in the arrow slit, with kestrel feathers, a jay's wing and one heron plume gone yellow at the tips, all bound with waxed thread. 'Hang them where the draught comes in,' she told you, 'and the wind will think it has already been let in and go looking elsewhere.' You did not believe her. You tied the stick to the iron hook regardless.
The feathers stirred, then hung still. The wind went round the tower twice, hunting, then lost interest and moved off across the marsh, taking the bell-noise with it. In the quiet you could hear the stone settling and the small tick of frost in the mortar.
By morning you had counted the beads a dozen times without meaning to. Two only, and the thread that had held the others was gone. You turned the stick over in your hands and found the knot retied by someone with a steadier hand than yours. Mab had come back up in the night. She had said nothing about it, and you decided, watching the grey light lift off the marsh, that you would not either.
