Cat head and flower on a leg

Neo-trad · Calf · Black and grey · Photo

A stylised cat's head with pointed ears, whiskers and almond-shaped eyes sits beside a large flower with a concentric centre and several leaves below it. The design is drawn in bold black outline with little interior shading, so the skin shows inside the shapes. The black and white photograph shows the tattoo across a bare leg, with a shoe visible at the lower left edge.

The cat has been sick on your boots again, and the second mate has said that if she does it once more she goes over the side before the Horn. So you take the bucket and a rag below and find her wedged in the bread locker, eyes narrowed to slips of lamplight. Her name is Mab, after no one aboard, and she has sailed longer than any of the crew who curse her.

Ninety-one days out of Liverpool and the sea has given nothing but grey swell and a wind that won't commit. The men play cards for scraps of salt pork in the forecastle. You carry her up through the hatch anyway, past the galley where the cook keeps his marigolds in a biscuit tin of soil on the sill, and she goes rigid in your arms, ears swivelling forward like someone listening through a wall.

"She's smelling it," says the cook, not looking up from his pot. "Cats know the land before the lookout does. My gran kept one that sat at the window a week before every drowning on the coast." He pulls a marigold from the tin, pinches the stem, and tucks it behind her ear. Mab allows this, which tells you more about the weather than any glass on the bulkhead.

At first light the lookout bellows, and by the time you reach the rail she is already gone, a flicker of black along the bowsprit with her tail held high. Off the larboard bow there is a smudge of green so faint it could be the sea forgetting itself. The marigold lies on the deck, still bright. You pick it up and hold it to your nose, and it smells of salt and of something you had nearly forgotten.
