Fern and fiddlehead on a calf

Botanical · Calf · Black and grey · Photo

The tattoo shows a tall fern frond with a curled fiddlehead at the top, alongside smaller fronds that fade into the skin. The main frond is outlined in fine black linework, while the background fronds use soft grey stippled shading. The design runs diagonally up the leg against a plain, softly lit background.

Tom had been gone since the thaw, and the fiddlehead by the peat hag had uncurled a full turn each morning, the way it always did when someone was about to come back the wrong way round. Nan Oswald knew this because her mother had told her, and her mother had it from a drover who swore he had watched a frond open three weeks before his brother's funeral.

She cut a single stem with the bread knife, wrapped it in damp dock leaves, and walked the sheep road up past the ruined kiln. The bracken on either side had gone brown at the edges, but the ferns under the alders were still green and taller than a man, and they leaned over the path as if listening.

At the quarry lip she found Tom sitting on a block of slate, his boots full of water, drawing spirals in the grit with a stick. He looked up and asked whether the frost had got into the hay. She told him the frost had got into everything. He said he had been following the curl of a fern down the hill for two days, and it had brought him round in a circle every time.

They walked home together with the stem held between them. At the gate, Nan pressed the cut frond into the wet earth by the step, where it would root or rot, and said nothing about the spiral. Tom went in first. The fern, she noticed later, had started to open again in the dark.
