Mountain range band on upper arm
Realism · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A black and grey tattoo of a mountain range runs horizontally around the upper arm, with a tall central peak flanked by smaller ridges. The peaks are built from fine hatched linework and soft grey shading, with darker tones at the base that fade into the skin. The tattoo sits centrally in the frame against plain skin, with a grey shirt and dark bag blurred in the background.

The theodolite had seized again by the time Maud reached the col, so she sat on a flat stone and drew the range by hand. Her father had always said the eye lies about distance but the pencil does not, so she worked from the tall central peak outwards, hatching each ridge with short strokes until the paper darkened at the base where the valley mist pooled like spilt ink.

Tom had wanted the peaks named after the directors in Leeds who were paying for the survey. Maud refused. The lowest saddle was already called the Widow's Gap by the shepherds, and the great peak had no name at all, so she wrote HALDER in small capitals beside it. That was her grandmother's surname, and nobody in the company office needed to know that.
By late afternoon the cloud lifted off the far ridge and the shadows lay across the rock in exactly the bands she had drawn. She sharpened the pencil with her knife, and when the light started to go she closed the book and walked down towards the hut, counting the ridges under her breath, one, two, three, until the last one stood dark against a sky the colour of the paper.
