Mountain range tattoo on the inner wrist
Dotwork · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
A jagged row of mountain peaks is tattooed across the inner wrist, with the tallest summit near the centre. The linework is fine and dark, and the shading inside the peaks and along the lower edge uses stippled dots that fade toward the skin. The hand is shown palm up against a plain black background, with a thin gold ring on one finger.

Maud Ferris cooked for the Ellery, a collier that carried coal up the Norwegian coast and came home with timber. Each dawn, before the stove was lit, she counted the peaks standing along the horizon and pricked one dot for each into the flour on the board, so the ship's boy could read from the dust where they had been.

The mate, Harl, thought this was nonsense. He said mountains did not care who counted them, and that a cook's work was biscuit and bacon. One February the sea turned grey and the range vanished behind snow for nine days. Maud kept pricking dots into the flour regardless, though there was nothing to count, and the boy asked her why. She said the dots were not for the mountains but for the place they would stand again once the weather cleared.
On the tenth morning the mist lifted from the north and the peaks rose up sharp, the tallest near the middle of the line, exactly where her dots had said they would be. Harl stood at the rail a long while. He never mocked the flour again, and after that he asked her to bake the loaf round on the mornings the range showed clear.
