Woman's profile framed by flowers and feathers
Botanical · Black and grey · Flash
A realistic drawing of a woman's face in profile, tilted upwards with eyes closed, emerging from a dense mass of flowers, leaves and feathers. The linework and stippled shading are fine and detailed, with soft gradients on the skin and sharp highlights on the foliage. The image is monochrome on a cream background, with the subject centred and the foliage spilling down the lower half.

Mind the puddle by the eel stall. It has been there since my grandmother's time and has never once drowned anyone, so step over it like a lady and let me get on. Rain again. The flower-sellers have pulled their tarpaulins down over the peonies, and the feather man has given up on his crows and gone to sit in his van with the radio on. Good. Now you are all listening, which is more than the gulls can say.

There was a girl who came to this market the winter the river rose over the cobbles. She sold black roses, which nobody had ever seen, grown in a cellar under the fish hall where the damp made them dark as ink. Every petal carried a speck of silver, as if the night had got in and decided to stay. Customers paid her in feathers. Rook, jay, owl, once a single peacock eye. She sewed them into her collar, and by February she could barely lift her head for the weight of them.
Here is the turn, and then I go home to my dry bed. One morning the stall was bare and the feathers were gone, and in their place lay a single pressed bloom on the wet step with a note in pencil: Keep the shop, I am upstairs in the stars. The fishmonger swears he still hears her singing above the cold store. I have never gone up to look. Some things are better left in the dark, where they grow best.
So that's the story. The rain is still falling, and you still have your coats to button.
