Dear Tomas, the Imperial has finally died on me, so forgive the crooked capitals. I have had it on the counter since Tuesday, and each time the letter E sticks I think of your father cursing it in the back room of the customs house at Lessow, the winter the river froze over the gate. He always said a machine that jams is only asking you to slow down.

The night shift has been long. Last Thursday a man came through the east lane with a suitcase full of pocket watches, every one stopped at a different hour. He wanted them declared as family heirlooms so they would not be taxed. I asked him whose hours they were. He said his mother could not sleep until all of them had been carried across, and that the watches were the only thing she still wanted. I did not stamp them. I rolled a slip into the machine instead and typed the only thing I could think of, then pushed it under the glass.
FIGHT OFF YOUR DEMONS, it said, and I put a full stop after it because I could not bring myself to leave the sentence hanging. He read it twice, folded it into his coat, and walked out into the sleet with the watches ticking against his ribs. I have kept the carbon copy. The ink came out thin, the way your letters always did when you pressed too lightly.
Come home at Easter. I will show you the drawer where the carbons live, beside the rubber stamp that says ADMITTED, which I have never once used on anyone.
