The cage stuck at the sixty-fathom mark and Davey Pryce felt the old dread climb his throat like damp. Through the gate he could see the lamp-room wall, where some deputy long dead had painted FIGHT YOUR DEMONS in letters taller than a man, the F curled like a fern frond. His father had called it the chapel man's joke. Nobody at Gelli Fawr found it funny.

Dai Hopkin shouted from the banksman's hut that the cage was free. Davey stepped in, counted the rope bells, and thought about the fall on number four level three weeks back, the timber that sang before it gave. Since then his hands shook at the lamp hook. His mother had sewn his name into the lining of his jacket that morning and said nothing, which was worse than talk.
At the face the seam was wet and black, and he swung his pick until his arms burned. Then came a crack, a hiss of stone, and the dust fell like flour through a sieve. He lay flat in the dark with his lamp guttering, and the thing he feared was not the roof but the silence after it. He began counting aloud, the way his father counted props, until the numbers became a fight of their own.
When the rescue men broke through at dusk, Davey was sitting against a standing prop with his pick across his knees. He asked for chalk before he asked for water. Under the painted words, in letters no bigger than his thumb, he wrote his own name and the date, so the next lad going down would know that someone had come back up.
