Close-up of a small black fine line tattoo on the inner forearm reading F:GHT ON in plain capitals, with the letter I replaced by a colon.

Small lettering reading F:GHT ON on a forearm

Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

The tattoo is a short phrase set in plain capital letters, with the letter I replaced by a colon so it reads F:GHT ON. The linework is thin and even, in solid black ink with no shading. The tattoo sits centrally on a pale forearm against a soft cream fabric and denim background.

Mind the flour on that step, lad, and keep the lamp low, the dough hates being hurried. You've wondered all winter why the board over the door says F:GHT ON, and nobody ever told you properly. Ambrose Tull painted it the year of the big snow, when the mill lads were out on strike and this was the only warm room on Shore Street. He had one brush left that would hold a fine line, and the stem of the I kept running away from him, so he gave up and put two dots where the letter should have stood. He said nobody would look twice in the dark.

They did look, though. Folk stopped under it with their collars up and their hands empty, and the colon made them pause, the way you pause for a breath before lifting something heavy. My grandmother used to say that was the whole trick of it. Ambrose had painted a sign that told you to stop for one heartbeat and then go on, and so they did. The lads came for bread on credit, and the flour came up from the docks in sacks that had been wet through, and every morning someone lit the oven before the church bell.

The last thing Ambrose ever did in that town was come round at four o'clock with a tin of paint and a steady hand, and touch up the board so the dots were sharp again. He wouldn't take payment. He said the bread was the payment, and he ate it standing where you're standing now, with his breath smoking, watching the window go grey.

There, hear that? The first loaf's knocking on the tin. Lift the cloth gently and tell me it isn't the finest thing you've seen this morning.
