Fight off your demons lettering on a forearm

Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A black and grey photograph of a forearm carrying the words FIGHT OFF YOUR DEMONS, set on two lines in a typewriter-style serif. The ink is solid black with soft grey tones in the skin and background, and the text is centred on the arm. The background is out of focus, which keeps attention on the lettering.

The typewriter had sat on the end of the bar since the road closed, and by the third morning of snow Agnes Holt had stopped dusting around it. Desmond Fry, the surveyor stuck in room four, found it on Wednesday and decided it was his. He hunted through the drawer under the till, found a sheet of the inn's cream stationery with a crease down the middle, and rolled it in with two fingers.

"Something for the wall," he said. "Your guests look like they need a sermon."

"They need the plough," Agnes said, but she watched him peck at the keys with the stiff deliberation of a man who had learned on something heavier. The E stuck. He freed it with his thumbnail and muttered at the machine. When he pulled the sheet out, the words sat in two even lines, black and centred, the last full stop struck so hard it had gone through the paper.

The power failed around eleven. Agnes lit candles along the bar and listened to the wind worry the shutters. Desmond sat with his cider and said nothing for once, and somewhere past midnight he began telling her about a dog he had owned as a boy, a long rambling tale with no point, which she let him finish because the snow made the hours stretch thin.

At first light the plough scraped down the lane and Desmond was gone without a goodbye, his room key left on the bar beside a folded note of thanks. Agnes found the sheet tucked under the typewriter's cover. She pinned it above the till, where the morning light came through the window and turned the letters backwards across the wall, pressed into the paper hard enough to read from the other side.
