Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

The telegram for Ada Quill came through on a wet Tuesday. It was from Lerwick, from her brother Tom, who had been ill with fever since the autumn. Ada came down the shingle path in her oilskin an hour later, because the island gossiped faster than the boat could carry news. She took the slip from him without sitting. She read it, and her mouth moved over the broken word, sounding it out the way children do.
"He never did like a full stop," she said, and folded the paper into her pocket. "That's a mark for going on."
