Ornate heart with leaves on a thigh

Neo-trad · Thigh · Colour · Photo

A large heart sits at the centre of the image, with a black outline and a decorative border of scallops, dots and pointed petal shapes. Inside, a cream panel holds a stylised branch of leaves in orange, rust red, olive green and black. The bold black outlines and solid fills give it a flat, graphic look, and the design fills most of the frame on a thigh.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The lift in Brackley House had been broken since March, so Mrs Okafor's grandson carried the paint tins up eleven flights in a plastic crate that cut into his fingers. Nell waited for him on the landing with the kettle already on her hallway table, the window behind her full of grey October. She had been painting the same heart for three weeks on a sheet of card taped to the wall of the stairwell, and it was the only thing on the block anyone had stopped to look at.

The border took her longest. Every scallop had to be the same width as the one beside it, or the whole ring would drift like a badly rolled pastry. Her mother had taught her that with a pair of compasses and a tin of Quality Street that still held buttons. The leaves were easier. They only needed to lean the same direction, as if a wind had come through a field once and never left.

On the last Saturday the council man came round with a clipboard and asked what the mural was for. Nell told him it was for the people who lived on the eleventh floor, who had stopped coming down to the bins because the stairs were too dark to trust. He wrote something down and went away. The next morning the bulbs were replaced, every one, and a caretaker she had never met stood at the bottom of the stairwell with his hands in his pockets, looking up at the card heart as though he had walked into a church by mistake.

She took the card down on the Sunday and gave it to Mrs Okafor, who folded it in half and tucked it under her arm like a hymn book.
