Stack of books on a forearm
Traditional · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A stack of three books is tattooed in black and grey on the inner forearm close to the wrist. Bold outlines and shaded spines give the books volume, and a small star sits on the lowest book. The plain dark background makes the pale skin and linework stand out clearly.

The galley of the collier Mary Ansdell rolled like a drunk off the Dogger Bank, and above the range you had three books that the last cook had lashed to the shelf with batten strips: a cookery book with a split spine, the ship's logbook with a coffee ring on its cover, and at the bottom the almanac, a thin grey thing you had carried since Hull and never once opened for a recipe. Tonight the sea was throwing pans off their hooks, and one batten had already come loose.

Mr Okonedo, the mate, came down wet to the shoulders and said the chart for the Harwich approach had gone into the bilge with the rest of the navigation room. Only the almanac had the tide tables. You dragged it out from under the logbook, its cover soft as flannel, and turned to the page where someone in pencil had ringed a small four-pointed star printed in the corner. The old men on the Humber had called it the steady one. Your father had called it the one that never moved while everything else did.
You held the almanac against the lamp and read the tide off it, then read it again, because the numbers were right and the ship's clock was a quarter hour wrong. You wrote the figures on the back of a meat docket and gave it to the mate, who shook the water from his cap and went back up without a word.
When the Mary Ansdell made the bar at first light, the three books were still on the shelf, almanac at the bottom with its star facing the wall, and you had the kettle on for the watch.
