The hook had been my father's before it was mine, and I checked it every night the way other men patted their pockets for matches. Ida went up to the rafters of the Starlight Ballroom by nine, her grey costume shiny at the elbows, waiting for me to say the chain was sound. Downstairs the band played a slow foxtrot nobody danced to properly, and the sawdust smelled of stout and wet coats.

She always went up first. Head down, arms loose, she hung from the ankle loop while the crowd tipped their faces up as if she were the moon. Two ropes ran from the rafters to the platform, thin as violin strings, and I could tell from their hum how the night would go. That Thursday they hummed too high. I told her to come down. She said she had counted the links twice and a number was a promise.

I found the crack after the last waltz. Hairline, dark with rust, the kind of flaw a man sees only because he has spent years looking for nothing else. I stood on the beam with the torch in my teeth while the floor shook with feet. Below, Ida was already swinging out, hair loose, the grey cloth gathering round her like smoke.

I didn't shout. I went down the ladder two rungs at a time, pushed through the dancers and told the drummer to stop on the next beat. The room went quiet. Ida came down the rope in one clean movement and landed beside me, cheeks flushed. You're late, Walter, she said. I held up the link. She looked at it a long moment, then laughed, and it was the best sound I had heard all year.
