Silhouette girl and red heart balloon on calves

Calf · Mixed · Photo

A solid black silhouette of a young girl in a dress reaches upwards on the outer side of the left calf, with smooth, filled edges and no shading. On the right calf, a small red heart-shaped balloon with a thin dark string sits higher up, in flat colour. The bare legs are shown against dark leather, with leopard-print sandals visible at the bottom of the frame.

Her grandmother had sold balloons on that corner for forty years and never once lost one. Hearts go where they are wanted, she used to say, though she never said who wanted them. Tansy stood on the bottom step of the well, arm stretched, fingers spread wide, and the balloon kept climbing as if it had heard her and decided to be stubborn.

The gate sergeant, Ilse Marr, had a firm rule about chasing things over the wall. But she looked up too, and so did the baker's boy with flour on his chin and a sailor with a grey parrot on his shoulder. Nobody moved. Tansy understood that the balloon was not coming back to her hand, and that the reaching was the thing she had actually come to the square to do.

When the balloon finally snagged on the weathervane of the highest tower, she did not climb after it. She walked home, took down her grandmother's spare spool, and tied a fresh length of string to a scrap of red silk. Now, she told the empty stall, you will have to come and get it.
