Small black fine line tattoo of a filled dot beside an open circle on the inside of a forearm, with a white bead bracelet nearby.

Filled dot and open circle on a forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A small tattoo of a solid black dot next to an outlined circle sits on the inner forearm. The dot is filled in with solid black ink, while the circle is a thin single line. The plain skin and light background keep the focus on the minimal design.

Do you remember the codes we made up behind the chapel wall when we were boys? A solid dot meant a thing done, an open ring meant a thing still owed. Mother thought we were daft. Since you sailed for Montreal I have added a fresh dot beside the ring every night, one for each day you have been gone, and I have never once rubbed the ring out.

Tonight Tom came up from the sorting office with a telegram just before the last train. I read it by the lamp. Mother is sitting up now and asking for the kettle, and the doctor says she will see the spring. I stood there a long while, then I took the chalk and filled the ring in solid, so the slate showed two black dots and nothing owed.

It looks wrong, somehow, like a full stop put in the middle of a sentence. Write to me when you can and tell me what the next mark should be. I am not going to make it up for you. The chalk is by the door, and the stove is still warm.
