Small triangle and cross wrist tattoo
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A close view of a raised hand and inner wrist showing two small black symbols: an open triangle above a cross with a short extra stroke. The linework is thin and solid black with no shading, and the tattoo sits near the wrist crease. The image is in colour, but the only ink is black against pale skin, with a wooden floor and cabinet softly out of focus behind.

Snow had been falling on Hollin Gate since Martinmas, and by the third week the drovers had stopped asking for rooms and asked only for a fire. Maud Caddick kept the inn at the top of the pass, and she kept her ledger in the same hand her mother had used, a mark for each guest written beside the bed number. A triangle meant a man who paid in advance. A cross meant a man who had lost his horse. A short stroke under the cross meant he could sleep in the loft if he gave the boy a hand with the hay.

On the ninth night a woman came up the track with no lantern and a child asleep across her shoulders. Maud did not ask her name. She looked at the woman's bare hand, then at the snow piled on the sill, and reached for the chalk. Nobody in the valley could read the parish book, but everybody knew which door bore which sign, and the signs were the only true thing the inn had.
The woman slept by the stove. By morning the lower road was buried to the eaves, and two carters who had come in on the storm were arguing over the price of a bed. Maud drew the triangle over the cross on the lintel, the way her mother had, and told them the rule of the house: a door with a mark on it was a door that had already been paid for, and nobody argued with a paid door.
When the thaw came in March the woman was gone, and so was the child's red coat from the peg. Maud found the ledger open at the old page. Beside the last entry someone had added a small, neat stroke under the cross. She did not rub it out. Some debts, she decided, were better left standing until the next winter came to call them in.
