Rope knot bracelet tattoo on a wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A small black tattoo shows a rope knot sitting on a thin rope band that wraps around the inside of the wrist. The linework is fine and even, with light shading that gives the rope a twisted texture. The image is a close view of the wrist and hand against a grey tiled floor, with the tattoo centred in the frame.

The band had been working through the same foxtrot since eight, and Marjorie Tull had counted its bars twice over to keep from watching the door. Outside, the pavilion at Hollin Bay smelled of wet tar and fried onions, and the sea slapped the pilings below the floorboards like someone impatient to be let in. Her grandfather had tied a length of tarred cord round her wrist that afternoon, one loop, one crossing, and a pull so firm it left a pale ring she kept touching with her thumb.

"A true lover's knot," he had told her, squinting at his own hands, which were all knuckle and salt. "Pull it from either end and it only tightens. Holds in any weather, provided you know which end you're holding." She had thought it was an old man's riddle. Now she sat on the bench by the cloakroom, turning the riddle over while the lamps swung overhead.
Dennis came in at half past nine, late, still in his netting smock, a coil of spare cord slung over one shoulder. He crossed the floor without looking at anyone else, which was the first thing about him she had ever liked. "Your granddad's knot," he said, nodding at her wrist. "He showed me too, years back. Said he'd show you properly if you ever asked him."
She stood up, slipped the cord free, and before he could argue she had looped it round his wrist and drawn it tight with the same single pull, the same crossing. "Now you hold that end," she said. The band struck up a waltz. He took her hand, and the loose cord trailed between them across the boards like a line that had finally found its mooring.
