Film camera and poppies on a forearm
Dotwork · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A vintage rangefinder-style film camera sits across the forearm, with its lens and top plate outlined in bold black lines. Poppy blooms and a curling bud wrap around the camera, and the petals are shaded with fine stippled dots. The design is mostly black and grey, with the lens and dial rendered in dense dotwork and the body in solid tones.

She tipped the spool into the cylinder by feel, counting under her breath, while her father's old camera sat on the draining board with its back open like a mouth.

He had shot the last roll on the railway embankment above Coldharbour, where the poppies came up through the cinders every June as if someone had paid them to. He never printed pictures of himself. The frames came up one by one in the rinse, and most were blurred, his thumb over the lens, a bud snapped shut by the wind. Then frame twenty-two: a bloom at the edge of the rails, every stippled dot of its centre sharp, and beyond it a single figure walking away with a dog. She held it to the window until the light turned the grain into something like frost.
She pinned the strip to the line above the sink beside the others and left the camera where it was. The shutter was still cocked. Some things, she thought, you wind on for the next person.
