Night forest silhouette with roses on a calf
Traditional · Calf · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo shows a woman's head and curled hair in profile, with the face area filled by a crescent moon, stars and a row of pine trees. Bold outlines are combined with stippled dotwork shading on the hair and lower forms, with solid black fills in the trees and petals. Two roses and a bud sit below the head on stems and leaves, all in black and grey on a leg photographed against a plain concrete wall.

Mary Quill came back to Thornwick for the school reunion with her hair set in the same tight rolls she had worn at fifteen. Nobody remarked on it, because everyone in the village knew what her mother had told the vicar's wife. The pines on Kettle Hill had always stood black against the sky, and on the night the old schoolhouse was pulled down, the whole row was seen to lean forward, like folk listening at a door.

The reunion was held in the church hall. The tea urn hissed and the sponge had too much icing. Jack Penrose asked where she lived now, and she said a flat above a launderette in Leeds, where the sky stayed orange all night and nothing came out after dark. He laughed, then saw she meant it, and stopped. "The trees don't like the orange," she said. "They never did."
People say that when a girl leaves Thornwick, the forest keeps a piece of its night for her, and she carries it about under her hair. At midnight Mary walked up Kettle Hill with the others following behind with torches. At the top she unpinned the rolls one by one. The hair fell loose, and out of it came the stars, then the crescent moon, which hung low over the valley like a dropped coin. The pines stood up straight and went quiet.
In the morning Jack found a single black rose on the church step, its petals hard and cold. Beside it was a bud still closed tight, and he left it where it lay.
