Small arrow tattoo on the ankle

Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

A small arrow with a feathered fletching and a pointed head is drawn in black ink on the side of an ankle. The thin, precise linework is shaded lightly, and the design runs diagonally down the foot. A white high heel with a metallic heel panel and ankle strap sits in the foreground, against a blurred stone wall.

Dear Tom,

The goose came in from Hallam's farm this morning with its wing feathers still warm, and I have spent the whole afternoon sorting them by curve. Father always said a right wing for a right-handed shot, left for the other, and that a feather cut from the wrong side will fly the arrow crooked into the next parish. I have his knife now. The handle is worn pale where his thumb sat, and I keep catching myself holding it the way he did, tip down, as if the shaft might still need straightening.

Mrs Penhallow came about the bolts for her boy's bow. She wanted them finished in blue, which I refused, and she bought them anyway in plain ash with three vanes each, cut so fine you could read the grain through them. She said you'd have laughed. I told her you'd have wanted the heads sharpened first, and she said that was the most you had ever said about anything that wasn't the sea.

Your last parcel is on the mantel, the one with the Gibraltar stamp. I have not opened the small tin inside. I know it holds the feathers you collected from the gulls at Kinsale, as you promised, and I know they are no use for anything but looking at. I will fletch one arrow from them tonight, a short one, and fix it to the wall above the stove where the light falls. When the wind comes round to the west I will know you are somewhere it is blowing towards.
