Small black line tattoo on an ankle

Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

A close-up of a person's lower legs wearing grey cut-out wedge sandals on a wooden floor. A small black tattoo of three short vertical strokes sits on the side of the ankle, with clean, solid linework. The image is in warm natural tones, and the tattoo is a small part of the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Harrowgate, the eleventh of Fennmonth. The ink has thickened in the cold, so I warm the pot against the stove before I write. The customs house is quiet now that the harbourmaster has gone north with the good scales and the last of the wine. Each morning I still scratch three short strokes beside the door frame, the way old Mabbot taught me: one for the tide, one for the gulls, one for the ledger that must balance before dark.

Today the ledger did not balance. A grey cutter came round the Teeth at noon with no flag and no manifest, only a boy in the bow holding a lamp that was not lit. He would not give his name at the rail. He asked only for the date, and when I told him he nodded as though I had confirmed a debt. He left a single brass button on the step and went back out on the ebb.

I have the button on the desk now, beside the inkwell. It is stamped with a crown, and a crack runs through the crown. I have searched the catalogue of the Crown Stores twice and found no such pattern, which means either the Crown has changed its mind about its own face or someone has been striking coins in the cellar beneath the Grey Teeth light. Either way, I was asked for the date, and I gave it.

Tomorrow I will scratch the strokes again, but four this time, the fourth one slanting, as Mabbot never taught me. I will leave the lintel for whoever comes to read it, and I will sleep with the shutters open so I can hear the bell if it rings wrong.
