Black fine line script tattoos on two ankles, one reading beach and the other partly hidden by a cowrie shell anklet charm.

Script words on two ankles

Lettering · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

Two bare ankles and heels are shown from behind against a pale background and a light wooden surface. The right ankle carries the word beach in black cursive script, and the left has part of a word ending in sun, partly covered by a metal anklet with a cowrie shell charm. The lettering is thin and even, and the photograph is softly lit with neutral tones.

Hush now, the tide is still making up its mind, and so was the sea the day Liss and Maro walked down to the beach with a sack of cowrie shells and one bad idea. They had heard that the sea keeps whatever it is given, so they meant to give it the one thing they could not spare: the sun. Every summer on Harrow Isle the sun slipped behind the rocks and did not come back up until the sea had agreed to it.

Liss tied a cowrie to her ankle with a length of fishing line and wrote the word sun in the wet sand with a driftwood stick. Then, because her hand was shaking, she wrote sand, and sand again, until the letters ran together like waves. Maro laughed at her and then did the same, scratching beach across the foam in her careful schoolroom hand. Each shell was a promise and each word was a door. The sea read every word, slowly and twice, the way you would read a letter from someone far away.

The old men argued about it for a week, and the children dared one another to stand in the surf after dark. On the eighth night the tide came in backwards, up the steps and into the chapel, and the sun rose out of the water wet and bright and furious. Neither girl had thought to ask what the sea would want back. It wanted nothing so clumsy as a price. It only wanted them to keep reading.

So if you ever meet two grown women on Harrow Isle who insist they are only waiting for the boat, do not ask which of them is the sand. The sea keeps its word, and it keeps the shells as well. Now go to bed, and take your shell off before it wakes the dog.
