Fine line arrow and circles on the upper arm

Fine line · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

A thin black arrow runs diagonally across the upper arm, with a small arrowhead at the lower left and curled fletching at the upper right. Two overlapping circles, one solid and one dotted, sit along the shaft, with a short curved stroke beside them. The black and white photograph is taken close up against a plain pale background, and the linework is crisp and even.

Dear Walter,

The eclipse came through on Tuesday, though the sky over Harrow Green was so grey you'd have missed it if Mr Pell hadn't rung the church bell to tell us. Everyone stood in the lane holding bits of smoked glass. Mother said it was the devil taking a bite, and Father said it was only the moon getting out of the way, and I thought of you, because you always said the moon was a lamp someone forgot to put out.

Since you left, the archery field behind the Ram has been mine on Sundays. I've taken up your old bow with the cracked nock, and I've had some luck, though not as much as Tom Ashby, who has stopped pretending he isn't showing off. Last week I chalked two rings on the hay bale, one whole and one only dotted where the rain had worn it away, and I shot for the gap between them. The arrow went wide, but it skimmed the dotted ring and stuck quivering in the post, its fletching still curled from the damp.

Mrs Hale brought the post up this morning and said the letters you've been sending from Portsmouth keep coming back with a red mark across the front. So I am writing this one to the address on your mother's card, and I'll keep writing until one of them gets through.

Come home when your ship does. I'll show you the arrow still standing in the post, and we can stand where the moon stood on Tuesday and see which of us can hit the gap.

Yours, Ellen
