Small compass tattoo on an ankle

Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

A small compass rose drawn in thin black linework, with two crossing lines ending in arrowheads and the letters N, E, S and W at the four points. The lines are crisp and even with no shading, and the ink is solid black. The photograph is black and white, with the ankle filling most of the frame against a textured, crinkled background.

The binnacle card had been swinging since the Dogger, and Ellis Varley stood with his palm flat on the glass as if he could hold north still by force. Fog sat on the water like wet wool. Behind him the deckhands coiled rope in silence, and somewhere to starboard a horn sounded, long and then short, the fleet calling its boats home.

His father had drawn the rose on the back of a tide table the winter before the boat changed hands. Four letters, two lines crossing, arrowheads at the tips where the thin pen had skipped and grown heavier. Ellis had copied it onto the chart table in pencil, then in ink, because his father never trusted anything he could only rub out once. The lines had been true. They were the only thing aboard that did not wander.

He let the card settle and read the arrows instead. The long arm pointed past the light at Skelby, and the short one to the west showed how the tide would set them if he did nothing. He eased the wheel a spoke, then another, and waited for the swell to confirm what the paper already knew.

The fog thinned at first light just enough to show the harbour wall, grey and level as a ruled line. Ellis took the pencil from behind his ear, found the crossing point on the chart, and wrote beneath the eastern arrowhead the word his father had always used for the end of a trip: Home. He left the pencil mark where it was. Ink was for the other charts.
