Fine line arrow on a forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A single arrow tattoo runs diagonally up the forearm, with its point near the wrist and stylised feathered fletching at the lower end. The linework is thin, solid black and unshaded. The pale, plain background shows silver beaded bracelets and a black cord on the wrist.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

You find the arrow on the second morning of the hard frost, when the ice has crusted over the trough and the ewes stand bunched under the ash as if waiting for an apology. It is lodged point-up in the frozen mud by the gate, its shaft straight as a ruler, the fletching of grey goose feathers notched like fish bones. Nobody at Coldharbour Farm owns a bow. Your father says the Ashby boys shoot at crows from the top field, and you say nothing, because you have already decided to keep it.

All week you carry it in your coat, and it is never warm. At night you lay it on the windowsill beside the paraffin lamp and run a thumbnail along the feathers. Mrs Pryce from the village, who sells eggs and gossip in equal measure, tells you the arrow belonged to a man who went up the moor after a stag in the winter of '47 and never came down. You tell her that is nonsense. The moor is only four miles off, and everyone comes down eventually.

On the seventh morning the thaw comes in sideways, rain on frozen ground, and the lane turns to soup. You walk up to the top field with the arrow held out in front of you like a dowsing rod. Its point leads you past the dead oak and the stile to a patch of grass the frost has not yet let go. There is a second arrow there, snapped at the nock, and a scrap of red wool caught on the wire.

You stand a long time. Then you push the good arrow point-first into the earth beside the broken one, let it stand, and walk home without it, sure that whoever needs to find the way will find it, the way you did, towards the warm kitchen light.
