Fine line botanical vine around the wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
Two photographs show the same delicate vine with slender leaves and small flower heads encircling the wrist. The linework is thin and light, with soft grey shading in the leaves and a single darker bloom on the left image. The pale, plain background keeps the focus on the ink and the fine detail of the design.

The bus shelter on Cathedral Street has been losing its argument with the bindweed since March, and by eleven at night you can hear the vine ticking against the perspex when the wind comes off the canal. You are supposed to be heading home. Instead you crouch by the bench with your phone torch angled low, tracing where the stem loops twice round the metal upright before it climbs out of reach.

Nobody from the council has come to cut it back. The leaves are slender and grey-green under the sodium light, and every few nights something new has opened: a cluster of small pale heads no bigger than a fingernail. You photograph them because your sister, who works nights at the hospital laundry, said she would not believe it otherwise. She texts back a single word, "Proof?", and you send her three pictures and a thumbs up.
A man in a yellow hi-vis jacket walks past with a bag of chips and stops to look. He says his gran grew the same thing up a trellis in Ancoats, and that it smelt of pennies after rain. You tell him it still does, and he laughs and asks whether you're going to report it or pick it. You say neither. You say the thing about a vine is that it keeps finding places to hold, even when nobody asked it to climb.
The last bus is a pair of headlights at the end of the street. You take one final picture, the stem wound round the upright like a bracelet nobody will ever take off, then slide the phone into your pocket and walk to the stop, leaving the shelter to the plant.
