Small fine line sprig on the back of the neck

Fine line · Neck · Black and grey · Photo

A slender, curved sprig with small offshoots and tiny stems sits on the back of the neck, with the person's head and shoulders cropped out of frame. The linework is thin, even and black, with no shading or fill, and the ink is set against pale skin. The close crop shows the nape above a plain cream top, with a soft, blurred pale background.

The snow has been falling on Harrowgate Pass since Tuesday, and by Thursday the landlady has stopped pretending the road will open. You are the one she sends up to the attic room with a candle and a bread knife, because the lad who usually does it has gone home to Settle with chilblains. The stranger in number four has been asleep since the coach came through, a bundle of wet wool with a leather satchel clutched to his chest.

You find him awake. He holds out a twig, pale and bent, its thin stems furred with ice. "Hawthorn," he says. "From the old wall at Cold Harbour. It was green when I cut it." You tell him there is no green left in the county. He says that is exactly why it must stay in water, and asks you to set it in the jug on the sill, away from the draught.

Downstairs the fire is failing. Over supper the landlady counts the coins, the cook counts the flour, and nobody counts the days. You stand at the window and watch the sprig take a little colour in the warmth, its offshoots lifting like fingers that have stopped being cold. When you climb back up the stranger is gone, the bed made tight, and the satchel left behind with a note in square capitals: keep the twig, the thaw is a week off, plant it where the wall breaks.

In March you walk the Cold Harbour lane with a spade. The wall has a gap the width of a door. Something green has pushed through the mortar, curved as if it were searching for the light, and you kneel in the wet grass and press the soil back around it with your thumbs.
