Fine line circles and diagonal line on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo shows two overlapping circles, one smaller and one larger with a dotted inner ring, crossed by a long diagonal line that extends past the circles. Small dots sit along the line and a tiny arrow-like mark appears at its upper end. The linework is thin and precise, rendered in black ink with light grey tones, and the design is centred diagonally across the forearm against a plain, softly blurred background.

Dad never trusted a compass that hadn't been dropped at least once, so when the brass one fell off the signal box in Sheffield, he picked it up, wiped it on his sleeve, and handed it to me like a biscuit that had been stepped on. It was past midnight. The rain had stopped but the gutters still ran, and the streetlights on Penistone Road hummed the way they did when the whole city was pretending to sleep.

He spread a bus map across the bonnet of the van and pinned it down with two spanners. "Start with the big one," he said. I set the point on the depot, swung the arc out to the ring road and drew it round, then made a smaller circle inside it, the way he'd taught me, so the two rims nearly touched. The dotted ring was my idea. You couldn't see the orbit, he said, so you had to guess at it, and a guess was honest if you marked it as one.
The line was his. He ruled it from the old chimney at Attercliffe, past both circles, and didn't stop where a sensible man would. "Things go further than the picture," he said. Along it he tapped small dots, one for each bridge we'd fixed, and at the top he drew a tiny arrowhead, pointing up at nothing much, a bit of cloud.
When the van's battery died we walked home under the sodium glow, and I still had the map folded in my coat. Years later I found it again. The circles had gone soft from handling, but the arrow still pointed off the paper, past the edge where the ink had run out, and I understood he had never meant the line to end on the map.
