Fine line arrow and circles on the side

Fine line · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo

A single arrow runs diagonally across the skin, crossing two overlapping circles and several arcs with small dots along the edges. The linework is thin and even, rendered in black ink with no shading. The design sits centrally on a pale, softly lit area of skin against a dark background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Hermias had told me the arrow was the only honest thing in the workshop. He meant the sightline, the bronze pin he set through the centre of the armillary, and he made me hold the straight brass rod against the setting sun each evening until my arm shook. The two rings, cut from a broken shield, hung one inside the other at the tilt the priests swore the moon kept.

The dots were the trouble. I marked them on a wax tablet every night: a bright point the rod always skipped, a second that never moved, and a third that wandered the rim like a goat that had lost its herd. Hermias said the wanderers were not lost at all, only doing something we had not yet learned to name. I did not believe him until the autumn the small red star slid backward past the rod and stayed behind it for nine nights.

When the rains came he sent me down to the harbour with the rod and a pot of lamp-black. I painted the long line onto the seawall where the shadow fell at noon, and fishermen gathered to watch a boy scrawl circles on stone. One of them asked whether it was a map of the gods. I told him it was a map of where we were standing, which was truer than I understood at the time.

Hermias died before the next conjunction. I still carry the brass rod in my belt, and when I cannot sleep I sight along it at the dark ceiling, the way he taught me, until the lines settle into their old places and I can find my way back without a lamp.
