Snowflake, drop and sun on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A small row of three separate motifs sits on the inner forearm: a six-armed snowflake, an outlined teardrop shape and a sun with a ring of short rays. The linework is thin and even, in solid black ink with no shading. The photograph is black and white against a plain pale background, with the arm filling the middle of the frame.

Dear Brother Anselm,
Keep reading
The new ledger came up from the valley on Tuesday, and I have spent three evenings learning to read the columns Brother Oswin left us. He kept the weather for forty-one years and never once wrote an opinion beside a figure. I have tried to follow his example. Yesterday the glass fell so fast that Prior Aldred sent me up the tower to ring the bell for the dormitory, and I found the first flakes already settling on the lead of the roof, six-armed and perfect, as if someone had pressed a stamp into the dark.
By noon the wind had turned, and the snow gave way to a grey drizzle that ran off the gutters and pooled in the cloister flags. Brother Oswin's mark for such days is a single drop, nothing more. I drew it in the margin and felt foolish, then realised it was the only honest entry I had made all week.
This morning the cloud broke open over the far fells and the sun came through like a wheel with its spokes cut short. The lay sisters from the farm came up the lane to see it, shielding their eyes, and Sister Winifred laughed out loud in the chapter house, which I am told has not happened since the old abbot died. I wrote the sun in the ledger, a ring with its rays, and beneath it the date in my own hand.
I am sending this with the carrier so you will know the book is in good keeping. Keep the ink from freezing where you are.
Yours in the cold and the light, Brother Thomas
