Small paw prints on the side of the abdomen

Other · Black and grey · Photo

A close view of a bare stomach with a navel piercing in the centre and two small black paw print tattoos on the lower left side. The paw prints are simple solid shapes with no shading, set against warm skin tones. Pinkish raised lines cross the abdomen, and grey patterned loungewear sits at the bottom of the frame.

Dear Ruth,

You'll think I've gone soft, writing a letter when the phone's perfectly good, but the signal at the top field drops out every time I try to tell you anything worth hearing. So here it is in ink, and the postman can wait for it.

The big snow came on the Tuesday, three days before you rang. By Thursday morning the lane was gone and the drift against the north wall stood higher than the gate. Bess was out before I'd got my boots on. I found her at the hedge, nose down, circling, and when I followed her I saw what she'd been after: a line of prints running out across the white, small and neat, then the bigger scuffed ones of a ewe that had gone down in the hollow and couldn't get up.

I don't know how long it took her to lead me there. Going back, the wind had filled most of the prints in, but the ones near the hollow stayed sharp, each pad a dark dint in the snow, a little clearer than the rest. I kept looking at them on the way down. Bess walked ahead of me the whole way, stopping to check I was still coming.

The ewe lived. Two lambs too, though one was a poor thing and I'm not sure it'll see March. Dad would have called it a good day's work and then complained about the cost of the feed. I think of him when I see the prints still on the back step in the mornings, frozen at the edges, leading from the gate to the door.
