Small fish outline on the inner wrist

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A small fish outline sits on the palm side of the wrist, drawn with a single thin, pale line. The tattoo is shown in close up against smooth skin, with the skin creases and a steel watch strap visible around it. The ink is faint and appears to be black or grey, with no colour.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The chalk had nearly gone from the hull by the time Ruth thought to ask why her father never filled the fish in. It was a single curved line with no fins and no eye, scratched at the bow of the Thrift the spring she was born, and every spring since he had gone down the slip with a stick of white chalk and gone over it again, carefully, without once colouring it. The harbour boys said it was a kind of prayer. Her father said it was a tally, and the sea had never once paid up.

That February she took the chalk from his coat pocket and tried for herself, shading the belly, pressing hard on the tail until the stick squeaked. Her father watched from the winch with his hands in his sleeves. When she stood back, the fish looked like something drawn and then abandoned, which was worse. "Leave the middle clear," he said. "Whatever swims into it can be what it likes."

She didn't understand until the autumn gales, when the Thrift tore her mooring and went up onto the shingle with the tide still in her. Waiting for the pumps, Ruth saw that the bare patch inside the chalk line had filled with rainwater, a spill of bladderwrack and a small silver flicker, a sprat caught in the outline and turning in the light as if it had always belonged there.

Her father found her sitting on the shingle with her boots full of brine and laughed properly for the first time that winter. "There you are," he said. Then he took the chalk from her and drew the line once more, leaving the middle clear.
