Two small fine line cross tattoos on the inner wrists of two people, one in black ink and one in red, with a black and white striped sleeve.

Two small crosses on wrists

Fine line · Other · Mixed · Photo

Two hands rest together with a small cross tattooed on the inner wrist of each. The crosses have thin, simple outlines and are drawn in black on one wrist and red on the other. The dark background and warm, close framing put the two small tattoos at the centre of the picture.

Mr Lusk set up his tent behind the gasworks on Saturday, the same as every year, with a painted sign promising tattoos while you wait and a tin of ink that smelt like pennies. He did mine first. It stung less than I'd expected and took no time at all, a small red cross laid just above the wrist, where Mother's watch strap used to rub. He asked whether I wanted it bigger. I said no. You'd have said no too, though you'd have made him draw it twice.

I've been practising my hand on the back of the Sunday paper ever since, the way you used to practise your signature. The cross doesn't blur when I wash up, which surprised me. Last night I held my wrist beside the lamp while Father read, and the red had gone a little brown at the edges, the way old pennies do.

Your black one will still be dark, I expect, because you were always the careful one. Write and tell me it hasn't faded. Write and tell me the train was warm, that Leeds has no sea, and that you're not sorry. I'll keep mine out of the sun until I hear.
