Fine line flower sprig on an ankle

Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

A thin black line tattoo shows a curving stem with three open, petal-like flowers and two small buds, set against pale skin. The linework is single-weight and unshaded, with no added colour. The design sits diagonally on the outer ankle, with a white sneaker and dark floor in the frame.

The sprig came in on Mr Halloran's dinner tray, which was the only place anyone could think to put it. His daughter had cut it from the verge behind the car park, three open heads and two buds, and wrapped the stems in a wet paper towel like something from a fishmonger. I found a specimen jar in the sluice room and filled it from the tap, and by eleven o'clock it stood on his windowsill beside the water jug, leaning slightly towards the car park lights.

He was a signwriter before his hands gave out, and he could not stop looking at it. 'Look at the way the stem bends,' he said. 'Nobody draws a stem that bends like that. They draw it straight and then ruin it.' I told him I'd never tried. He said I had the wrong hands for it anyway, which was fair. On my rounds through the small hours I'd find him awake, tracing the air in front of the flowers with one finger, as if he were laying out a sign he would never be able to paint.

On the third night one of the buds split. I wrote it on the whiteboard in the corridor, under the bed numbers, because that is where we write the things that matter on nights: 'Bed 4, bud open, 2am.' The ward sister read it at handover and rubbed it off with her sleeve, not unkindly, and I wrote it again.

At quarter to six, when the light came up grey over the car park, he was asleep with his mouth open. The second bud had opened too, its petals turned out like the spokes of a wheel. I changed the water the way I'd been taught and left the jar exactly where it was, leaning towards the window.
