She did not believe it. The fault, she thought, was out in the distance, a hundred and twelve million kilometres of silence between her and the other end of the cable.

Teodor Asante was somewhere on the far side of that silence, aboard the mining drone Quietus, locked to the same frequency. They had met once, in a noodle canteen on Mars, where the bowls went cold while they argued about whether a line on a screen could be trusted. Now their monitors traced the same wave, and when hers faltered, his faltered too, half a breath later, like someone following a step behind on a stair.

On the fourth watch she sent him one message: copy the trace exactly. The hull-marking kit was still in the locker, its pigment meant for seams and rivets. They spent the rest of the shift inking the same jagged line into their own skin, one needle's width at a time, so that whatever happened to the cable, the rhythm would travel with them.

The relay came back eleven days later. The monitor steadied, the trace ran clean and whole, and Ilse caught herself watching the screen rather than the stars. Out in the dark, the line went on answering her a beat behind, and she let it.
