Circle and cross on two wrists
Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo
Two wrists are shown close together on a dark surface, each carrying a small single-motif tattoo. The left wrist has a thin black outlined circle, and the right wrist has a simple black cross with short strokes. The linework is fine and solid black with no shading, and the composition is tight and centred on the two marks.

Batter in a squeeze bottle, flour on the bench, the radio turned low to the shipping forecast. Every bun in the first tray got a cross down its top, four quick strokes, and my hand had long since stopped asking me how.

Dell came in at half four and never said good morning. Dell did the rings: a pinch of dough rolled into a rope, looped and sealed so the join vanished under the glaze. We had worked side by side for eleven years and spoken maybe a hundred words a week, most of them about flour prices. Dell thought the crosses were fussy. I thought the rings looked like nothing at all, which was the point of them.
On the Thursday the van for the hospital kitchen came early, Dell pushed a tray of ring rolls across the bench and said, "Put one of yours on the corner tray. They'll want a cross on something." It was the longest speech I ever heard from Dell. I piped a cross onto the last bun and set it beside a ring, the two of them touching at the edge of the tin.
When the sun came up over the car park, the tins were stacked by the door, warm through their cloth. I wiped down the bench, turned the sign, and found a crumb of dough stuck to my thumb in the shape of a small, wobbly loop. I left it there. It seemed to belong with the rest of the morning.
