Small circle and cross tattoos on wrists

Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo

Two hands rest together, with a small black circle drawn in thin, slightly uneven linework on the inner wrist of the left arm. A small black cross sits on the inner wrist of the right arm, drawn with similar fine strokes. The ink is solid black on pale skin against a dark, textured surface, and the close framing keeps both marks central.

Tuesday, Ashby Sidings. Rain since six, and the big top is still folded in the back of the lorry because nobody can face the guy ropes in this. Dennis says we'll pitch on Saturday regardless, which is what he said last Saturday and the one before. The elephant went to a sanctuary in March, so the only thing left to feed is the ring horse, and he's finished his oats before the lads have had theirs.

Ruth and I spent the afternoon in the ticket wagon playing noughts and crosses on the steamed-up window. She always takes the cross. Says it looks like the X on a pirate's map, which means something is buried under it. I told her the only thing buried under it is the Bristol booking that never came through. She drew the first line through my circle and then didn't finish the game. We both know how it goes when it's just the two of us. Somebody always has to stop before the board fills.

Dennis came round at teatime with the letter from the council. Three weeks to clear the field, and the wagon's to go to a scrapyard in Grimsby. He read it out in the voice he saves for funerals, folded it into his pocket and asked if anyone fancied a brew. Nobody answered. Ruth went out into the drizzle to unhook the flags, and I watched her from the step, her fingers red with cold as she worked the knots loose.

Later I wiped a clear patch on the window with my sleeve. The board was still there underneath, the last game half finished, the cross in one corner and my circle beside it. I didn't rub it out. Tomorrow the rain might stop, and somebody will have to make the next move.
